Chicago Med

The episode: “The Ghosts of the Past” (season 5, episode 17)

Why it’s ranked No. 2: While at least Chicago Med wasn’t encumbered by trying to service a One Chicago event and additional characters during its 100th episode, it still suffered from not being able to stand out from any other episode during season 5. The hour spent so much time tying up the numerous plotlines that Chicago Med has left ongoing throughout the season, that it didn’t have time to do anything that felt like it was recognizing the milestone.

It gets higher marks than Chicago PD because it at least packed in more important moments, such as April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) finally telling fiancee Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) that she had kissed someone else, and a wedding between Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) and her boyfriend Ben (recurring guest star Charles Malik Whitfield). The writers definitely made the episode as big as it could possibly be.

But it suffered because it missed so many opportunities to make it special. We didn’t get any explanation for why Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) or Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) didn’t turn up for Maggie’s wedding; it would have been even better to see them in the crowd, or even have a case of the week that could have brought one or both back to help.

Seeing Reese settle her differences with Charles would have been more entertaining that Charles trying to make amends with his rebellious teenage daughter. Seeing Connor at all would have made everyone’s week. Or maybe bringing back an early patient from season 1 for a return visit? This could have been so much more.
