Goodwin

Goodwin’s son Michael (guest star Hampton Fluker) is in town for 24 hours, in order to take a job interview. And her ex-husband Bert (guest star Greg Alan Williams) pops up thinking he wants to crash their planned dinner to tell Michael that he and Sharon are trying to reconcile. Sharon is not enthused; she also doesn’t think whatever they’ve been doing most of the season is that serious. Bert leaves looking disappointed.

But Michael confronts Sharon about the subject anyway. “He walked out after 35 years of marriage,” he reminds her. She assures him that they “had a drink,” omitting that they’ve seen each other since. That seems to placate Michael, who sets up a plan to meet Mom for dinner.

After yelling at Will, Chicago Med gives Goodwin a scene with his patient’s daughter Molly, who’s distraught. “Do you really believe your father isn’t acting in your mother’s best interests?” she asks. The young woman admits that she didn’t know about her mother’s health issues, and Goodwin suggests that Evelyn was trying to protect her from exactly this situation. She encourages Molly to support her father, not fight him.

This Chicago Med plotline ends with Bert showing up at the dinner just like he wanted to, but because Sharon changed her mind and invited him. Michael wants no part of this but she insists that he’s going to stop hating his dad. Talking to Molly has changed her mind; she thought she was protecting her kids by not talking to them about her divorce, but now she thinks “it’s time for this family to start healing.”

Maggie

Maggie’s new husband Ben (guest star Charles Malik Whitfield) brings one of his patients by the hospital. Auggie has a chronic condition that flared up that morning, so Ben thinks the kid needs to be looked at. He also tells Maggie that he hasn’t been able to find the kid’s foster mother yet either. This might just delay Ben and Maggie’s honeymoon.

Dr. James Lanik (recurring guest star Nate Santana) shows up to lend a hand. He also seems to be in a good mood, for him anyway. But he tells Maggie and Ben that the reason why the kid is there is because he’s missed several prior medical appointments. He wants to call Child Protective Services if Ben still can’t find the foster mom.

Eventually Ruth does show up, claiming she hasn’t had her phone while at work. She also says she can’t always get her foster son to his treatments because of the distance from her house to the clinic and her work schedule. She tells them that maybe they should report her to CPS because “it’s too much, and I can’t.” Ben has a massively nonplussed look on his face, and who can blame him?

The duo break this news to Auggie, who takes it on the chin, saying “No one wants a sick kid.” But Chicago Med fans have already seen this coming: Ben wants to stay with him, even though it means rescheduling their entire honeymoon.
