Taking major risks

Chicago PD saw Upton interrogating Luis. She told him that Rojas tried to save him, even though he didn’t see it that way. “Be angry, but don’t be an idiot,” Upton insisted. She didn’t want him to throw his life away because he was pissed at Rojas.

Luis finally caved, and told her that he got his orders from TJ, so Intelligence set up a sting to nab him and Gael. While Upton put a wire on Luis, he asked her how long Vanessa worked in Intelligence. “Eight months,” she told him. Adding that Intelligence is the most elite CPD unit, she implied that he should be proud of what Vanessa had been able to do thus far.

While the team was waiting for the sting, all of their trackers were cut, which meant almost all of the wire went down, except for the tracker on TJ’s vehicle. Voight ordered Upton and Rojas to get eyes on the car and they found TJ shot dead in the front seat. Gael had made them and he wasn’t coming to the meet. Intelligence had been screwed over once again.

To try and rectify the situation, Hailey and Hank met up with the State’s Attorney. Sadly, the ASA told them there wasn’t enough on Gael to build a case. Even more saddening? Luis wasn’t going to get the deal that he had been promised for giving up his information. Rojas told him the harsh news, complete with a tearful admission that he was the only one who ever cared for her.

That relationship was gone, and that fact even got Hailey emotional as she was standing outside the interrogation room watching. Upton took Luis down to the basement, and got him to tell her everything about the traps he installed in Gael’s cars. Then went to work and planted a few bricks of drugs in Gael’s car, which patrol found and arrested him for. That meant the case against him could be rebuilt, and Luis got the deal he had originally been promised.

Chicago PD ended with Voight calling Upton into his office, where he questioned her actions, as they were definitely mirroring his own more often than not. He didn’t want her to be him; that was his job. Getting directly into her face, Voight explained to her that if “you cross enough lines, you forget where they are.”

He then told Hailey that he signed her up to be loaned out to the New York FBI—hoping that it would teach her about working between the lines and setting up a crossover with Dick Wolf‘s other series FBI.
