Chicago PD and FBI crossover: 3 things we need in the episode

"Emotional Rescue" - The FBI team investigates a drug deal gone bad after the body of a college student is found. With the Chicago PD and FBI crossover officially a go, here’s what we need to see from Hailey Upton’s appearance on FBI to make One Chicago fans happy.

One Chicago fans will be tuning into FBI next week, as it’s been announced that Tracy Spiridakos will guest star on the CBS drama as her Chicago PD character Hailey Upton.

That’s pretty momentous news—it’s not very often that you see shows from two different networks share characters—but it also creates a ton of expectations. There may be some fans of Chicago PD that have never watched FBI before, or viewers mgiht be expecting something on the level of the massive One Chicago crossovers we see every season.

So what are the things that would make this cross-network crossover worth it for One Chicago enthusiasts? What are we expecting from this FBI episode? Here are three things on our must list; let us know your thoughts in the comments.

1. A reason for Upton’s arrival

We don’t mean what was revealed at the end of Wednesday’s Chicago PD episode “Lines.” After Upton planted drugs on a suspect to ensure his prosecution (and a plea deal for the ex-boyfriend of her roommate Vanessa Rojas), she was called out by Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). Voight exploded, reminding Upton that he didn’t want her to turn into him (referencing this scene from two months earlier).

But this crossover has to be about more than just Upton getting a slap on the wrist. That’s not big enough for a two-show event (especially to FBI viewers; remember that this is an FBI episode, so those characters will take priority). Voight states that the Bureau reached out to them looking for an officer, so this is obviously a federal case with Chicago connections of some kind. What will it be? Why should we care?

This crossover wasn’t something that was planned overnight, so clearly somebody—maybe Rick Eid, since he runs both shows—came up with an FBI storyline that they felt specifically needed the Upton character. We need to see that on-screen and feel that her presence in the episode is necessary to close this case, giving this whole event a bigger purpose than what’s essentially a time-out for Hailey.
