With Chicago Fire season 8 likely to be cut short, these major questions will probably be left unanswered until season 9.

One Chicago fans are bracing themselves for an early end to Chicago Fire season 8. Production on all three One Chicago series, as well as dozens of other TV shows, was shut down in March because of current events, and many of the series that stopped filming are having to end their seasons ahead of schedule.

While NBC has not made any official announcement as to when the Fire season is ending, next week will already be the season’s 19th episode, which is most of the way through the season anyway. Given that there would be only a handful of episodes left, and then we won’t see some of those, odds are very good that some major questions fans have this season won’t be answered.

The good news is that Chicago Fire has already been renewed for season 9, so the show will return (there’s also no indication yet that a new season won’t air this fall) and answers will hopefully get revealed then. But here are the biggest uncertainities unlikely to get resolved this season, leaving viewers to speculate about them:

1. Will Casey and Brett start dating?

Chicago Fire has been teasing a romance between Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) since last season, but there hasn’t been any significant movement on that front this season—to the point where One Chicago fans aren’t really sure what’s going on with them. And we expect the confusion will continue until next season.

That’s because the writers have been extremely slow-burning the relationship with a bunch of “will they, won’t they” type moments, and they’ve spent all of the season so far doing that. They won’t have time left to get Casey and Brett anywhere near where viewers would want them to be at the end of the season.

We’re not even sure if Casey wants to pursue a relationship with Brett anymore, thanks to the twist of once again bringing back his ex-wife Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund). She and Casey still have feelings for each other, as evidenced by their hookup, and Dawson left it open-ended by inviting Casey to visit her any time.

And Brett’s had the whole birth mother storyline over the last several episodes. While she has been leaning on Casey as her primary source of support, there hasn’t been anything there that couldn’t be dismissed as just a good, strong friendship either. Especially with what just happened to her mom, who says Brett would even want to start a romance right now? So this will likely get more confusing, not less, by the time the season ends.
