Chicago Med questions likely to be unanswered in season 5
3. Is Will okay or is he headed for trouble?
Speaking of Manstead, the idea that Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) would have his own storyline and not be so strongly tied to Natalie was incredibly promising. Will, like Natalie, needed a chance to focus on things other than the relationship that had been such a huge part of both of their lives for so long. But then, once Will got said storyline, his life kind of went off the rails and now we have to ask if he’s okay.
Will’s personal and professional judgment has been questioned multiple times in the second part of Chicago Med season 5. He took the risk of working at a safe injection site. He went above and beyond to help drug-addicted colleague Dr. Hannah Asher (recurring guest star Jessy Schram). He slept with Dr. Asher. And in the most recent episode, Will’s conduct while treating a patient with Alzheimer’s disease got him hauled into the administrator’s office.
Fans have focused on Asher and if that romantic relationship—we’re going to assume that they’re back on, since Will was last seen going up to her apartment again—and what being involved with a recovering addict is going to do to Will. But considering how he’s been behaving outside of that, too, it’s worth asking whether or not he’s got a bigger problem. Could he be burning out? Finally cracking under the stress of the last few seasons?
Whatever has him on tilt, it doesn’t show any signs of being resolved, given how the writers are just getting started with revisiting the Hannah story. Even if nothing else happens, that’s going to give Will a lot to deal with for a while.
