Maggie and Natalie

Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) hears that the state has found foster parents for Auggie, Ben’s student who was first introduced in the previous episode. While that’s good news, and they seem like great people, Maggie doesn’t quite seem ready to let go.

She’s also not sure Auggie is ready to leave the hospital. She realizes he’s still suffering some stomach pain and decides to ask Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) to take a look at him. Chicago Med has Natalie do a quick consult off-screen and she tells Maggie that Auggie needs treatment right away. But when the duo try to get started, they find out that Auggie’s procedure has been “denied by DCFS.”

Bureaucracy!

The state still has control of Auggie’s medical care, and of course there’s a convoluted procedure that they insist on following. The DCFS rep tells Maggie and Natalie that she’s “trying her best” when all she’s done is kick his case up to a mediator and that will take days. Days which, of course, Auggie does not have.

Maggie appeals to Dr. James Lanik (Nate Santana). Lanik does not want to waste his time and thinks she’s wasting hers. In typical Chicago Med style, Auggie gets worse and his foster parents arrive on the scene just as alarms are going off all over the place. “It’s emergent now, no need for consent,” a snarky Natalie tells the DCFS rep as they take Auggie up for treatment.

After Maggie has her own snarky confrontation with the rep, she and Ben find out that the would-be foster parents have decided to cancel the adoption because, having seen Auggie’s health problems first-hand, they think he’d be “too much to handle.” Fans see this coming: Maggie and Ben decide, on the spot, to become Auggie’s new foster parents.

Goodwin

Sharon Goodwin’s (S. Epatha Merkerson) son Michael (guest star Hampton Fluker) tells her that he got the job he was interviewing for—not only in Chicago, but right at Chicago Med! He’s now a medical device representative, and it’s not like sales reps and doctors have ever had awkward relationships.

Michael immediately starts asking his mother for inside information on the doctors at her hospital. “Since I’m going to be coaching them, I want to establish a rapport,” he says. She doesn’t think her staff needs coaching. Goodwin finds out later from Lanik that her son has been schmoozing him.
