Chicago PD put Adam Ruzek in the middle of a kidnapping in Buried Secrets. Find out what happened in our Chicago PD season 7, episode 19 recap.

This week’s Chicago PD was a feature episode for Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), in which the audience learned more about his personal life while he ran a kidnapping investigation.

Wednesday’s episode “Buried Secrets” saw Ruzek witness the abduction of an executive’s daughter, and get to run point on the Intelligence Unit’s subsequent search, which ended up having a lot to do with her sneaky father.

Meanwhile, Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) learned—as did viewers—that Ruzek had been having a sexual relationship with a bartender. What would that mean for the future of Burzek?

Kidnapping and a car crash

For a Ruzek-centric episode, it’s kind of funny that Chicago PD opens this week with Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) picking up mail for Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). The show is working in Upton’s FBI crossover appearance. Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) speculates that Upton could stay with the FBI and asks Jay if he misses her; he replies that he does, because she’s his partner.

Burgess wants to go out with Ruzek, but he’s got plans. Those plans include drinking in a bar by himself. The bartender Sheri hits on him, and Ruzek doesn’t mention Burgess. Instead, he tells Sheri that he’s going outside to get some fresh air, and he’ll see her in 20 minutes.

Outside the bar, Ruzek watches a young blonde woman walk by—and then the man following her. Adam tries to catch up but doesn’t move fast enough to stop her from being thrown into the back seat of a car. He calls the kidnapping in and then takes a couple’s vehicle to give chase. Which might have worked if he didn’t crash the car about two minutes later.

Chicago PD cuts to Ruzek being treated by paramedics when Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) walks up. “You know it’s not what it looks like,” Ruzek says, saying he was trying to avoid pedestrians when he crashed. Voight asks if he’s got his head in the game, and when Ruzek says he does, the boss says that he will be in charge of the investigation.

After reassuring Burgess that he’s fine back at the district, Ruzek brings her along with him to question Sheri. Sheri is not enthused about being blown off by someone she thought was just a city employee. “I just like to know who I’m sleeping with,” Sheri tells Burgess, adding that Ruzek is “hung up on his ex.” Burgess replies that Sheri should give him time.
