In this article, we’re profiling Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).

What happened

Will Halstead had one of his more interesting Chicago Med seasons, and by the end, one of his most confusing. Season 5 started out to be more of the same as Will continued to worry about and pine over ex-fiancee Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto); his angst wasn’t without merit, though, as Natalie was making mistakes in her work due to her brain injury and dating someone who would turn out to be a sociopath.

The writers took a big gamble by having Will reject Natalie’s attempt at reconciliation during the midseason finale, and it seemed exciting that he was getting his own story when he went off to work at a controversial safe injection site. That was one of Chicago Med‘s biggest ethical dilemmas of the season.

Unfortunately, the writers also undermined it by simplifying it into a romantic story. Will ended up in bed with Dr. Hannah Asher (recurring guest star Jessy Schram), the doctor whose addiction he had vowed to report. And while Hannah is now clean and sober, and she and Will are happy so far, Will could have had so much more to do if the show hadn’t just sent him into another complicated relationship.
