Our prognosis

Since Casey’s love life is so unresolved, Chicago Fire will almost certainly continue to bring it up in at least the first part of the season. However, that does not mean the show is going to give us any kind of an answer; especially since Brett has enough going on with her mother’s death and then her partner’s departure, it’s not the time to push a Casey and Brett romance, if that’s even still the plan.

So if that’s not going to happen off the bat, where does Casey go in season 9? The stories that he had professionally, even though they seemed to follow a similar theme, were pretty good. He was able to step up for characters who were really down on their luck, and that’s what audiences have come to expect from Casey. He’s always fighting for the little guy, whether as a firefighter or as an alderman.

He could do more of that next season. Perhaps he takes on some sort of community program, like Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) has done? He could do some volunteer work. City politics didn’t quite work for him, but there are other ways that Casey could reach out a helping hand to people throughout the city. And if he’s finding fulfillment in other ways, then it won’t matter as much to the audience that we don’t know who he’s going home with.

Plus, if he still does have some post-traumatic stress from all the times that the show has almost killed him, working a little more outside Firehouse 51 would give him an outlet. Because the odds are pretty good that Chicago Fire will put him in another dangerous situation; that’s what happens every season. So why not give him something else, or someone else, that makes him happy as a way to balance that out?
