What Chicago PD season 7 means for Adam Ruzek

Adam Ruzek has never been the easiest Chicago PD character to figure out. His characterization seems to change depending on what the season or storyline needs; sometimes the show leans into his temper and being rough around the edges, and other times it shows how compassionate and savvy he can be.

The seventh season is an example of that. The way that Ruzek reacted to Burgess’s pregnancy was admirable. He was always completely supportive of the decisions that she made about her future and the unborn child’s future, and he never tried to make any choices for her. He didn’t run away or blow it off. It was admirable.

That being said, the end of the season didn’t match up with the first part. It was frustrating to have Ruzek getting drunk and having a fling with a bartender if he was still in love with Burgess, and his subsequent explanation that he was trying to work his baggage out felt like Chicago PD trying to justify that plot twist after the fact. It might have added some drama to that episode, but it really wasn’t necessary.

It also put a question mark over fans’ heads going into next season. Is Burzek really back together or not? They both care for each other, but Ruzek is off with someone else. And even putting that aside, they never put a serious label on their relationship when they reunited. So will they formally get back together next season or just continue with their new normal? And if so, what does that mean for Adam, who really does need some stability in his life somewhere?
