Our Chicago PD season 8 prognosis for Adam Ruzek

Ruzek is a little bit like Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) on Chicago Fire. You keep wanting them to get their stuff together, but they never quite get there, because the writers like them more when they’re a little out of sorts. So will Adam continue to mature based on the life-changing experience he and Burgess just went through, or is he going to slide backward next season?

Adam didn’t really advance as far as he could have during season 7. Rick Eid’s comments about him, Burgess or Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) possibly being promoted to detective turned out to not mean anything, as the show never promoted anybody this season and didn’t even seriously broach the subject. And while he and Burgess did get back together, making Burzek fans happy, the show felt like it was always looking for a wrench to throw into the relationship.

So what’s next for Adam Ruzek? Promotion wouldn’t seem like a real possibility, with his temper and how he’s ticked off more than a few people over the last few seasons. That kind of reputation would presumably work against him. But he could still step up professionally and take a bigger role in cases. And if Atwater’s situation is going to go on for a while, which it seems like it will, Ruzek would be a great person to have in his corner—because Adam won’t hesitate to play just as dirty as Doyle’s bunch are.

It might also be interesting to see Ruzek and Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) work together more or come into conflict more. Halstead is supposedly the person who could take over Intelligence, but Ruzek is closer in ideology to how the unit is really run. We saw Adam butt heads with Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) when Antonio was in charge; having Ruzek and Jay not get along, or have to learn to get along, would be like a metaphor for Chicago PD‘s future.
