Chicago Fire season 8 character review: Christopher Herrmann
Our Chicago Fire season 9 prognosis for Christopher Herrmann
Things probably won’t change much for Herrmann when Chicago Fire returns. He’s a creature of habit, who does some serious stuff and some not-so-serious stuff throughout the season, and he never veers too far in either direction.
And even if the writers wanted to have some sort of radical change for Herrmann next season, there’s really nowhere for him to go. He’s been promoted, so unless he gets demoted, he’s frozen professionally. His personal life is already full with Cindy and the kids. He’s somewhat static in that sense, but that doesn’t make him any less effective; it just means the writers know what they can do with him.
Herrmann’s back and forth with Ritter continues to be a joy to watch, especially when it got a lot more serious in the aftermath of the mattress factory fire. It’s hard to say, though, where that will go because Daniel Kyri is still a recurring cast member, making it difficult to predict if he’ll be back or for how many episodes. It would be fantastic if the show would make him a regular after two seasons and focus more on Herrmann as a mentor, and maybe learning a few things from Ritter as well.
Plus, whatever happened with Herrmann getting new partners in running Molly’s? It felt like the show just scratched the surface of that sure to be hilarious storyline. Especially given that Amy Morton is so underused on Chicago PD, this would be perfect timing for her to turn up on Fire and play off Eigenberg further. That would be a remarkable double act! So while huge changes may not be ahead for Herrmann, there’s still a lot of fun to look forward to.
