Chicago Med alum Heather Headley stars in Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias
Sweet Magnolias brings Chicago Med’s Heather Headley back to Netflix.
Heather Headley might not have been on Chicago Med for awhile, but fans can see her starring in the latest Netflix original series Sweet Magnolias.
The award-winning actress, who recurred as hospital executive Gwen Garrett on the One Chicago medical drama, is one of the leads in the romantic drama based on Sherryl Woods’ novel series of the same name.
The show follows three best friends in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina as they start a new business together. When Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Reba) divorces her cheating spouse (Chris Klein, The Flash), she and her friends decide to turn a mansion into a full-service spa.

Headley plays the character of Helen Decatur. Helen has a successful career as an attorney but agrees to go into business with Maddie and their friend Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott of Drop Dead Diva).
In addition to supporting her friends, she also has an on-again, off-again relationship with Ryan Wingate (Michael Shenefelt).

The series follows Helen, Maddie and Dana Sue’s love lives, as well as their work to make their new business successful and Maddie trying to raise her kids with ex-husband Bill, who is now engaged to his mistress (Jamie Lynn Spears).
Heather Headley appeared only once in the fifth season of Chicago Med, in the episode “The Ground Shifts Beneath Us.” It’s not known whether or not she’ll return for season 6. But she is an enormously talented actress, who has won a Tony Award and a Grammy Award, and well worth checking out in any project that she’s in.
This role is particularly significant because Sweet Magnolias is the first time she’s been back on TV since she played Gwen. It’s also her first starring role in a television series, and it brings her back to Netflix as well; she previously recurred as Dr. Jamison in Spike Lee’s TV version of She’s Gotta Have It.
Headley is one of several One Chicago alums who have been in recent Netflix projects. Med alum Louis Herthum starred in What/If, Chicago Fire‘s Charlie Barnett starred in You season 2 as well as Russian Doll, and Chicago PD‘s Wil Traval and Barbara Eve Harris were both in Messiah.
