Law and Order: Hate Crimes is still moving forward at Peacock.

Law and Order: Hate Crimes remains headed for NBC‘s streaming service Peacock; it’s just taken a back seat to the new Law and Order: SVU spinoff.

Warren Leight, who was developing Hate Crimes before he returned as showrunner of SVU for their latest season, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter’s Top 5 Podcast recently and confirmed that the project still exists and is aimed for streaming.

“I think it was perceived to be a better fit with Peacock,” Leight said, explaining that “The vocabulary people use when they commit hate crimes is not acceptable for network television.”

The fact that Law and Order: Hate Crimes will stream is not new; Dick Wolf told One Chicago Center in 2019 that “that’s going to be on the streaming platform” at NBC’s One Chicago Day festivities.

What is news is the fact that the spinoff is still happening, considering Leight’s return to SVU and all parties pushing forward the more recent project starring Christopher Meloni in his fan-favorite role of Elliot Stabler. Leight did confirm that the Stabler show is the priority at the moment.

“I think that show goes first,” he said, while also pointing out that current events, unfortunately, make this one more relevant.

“It’s about the toll a hate crime takes on a victim, a victim’s family and a community,” he said. “It’s an arena I think needs to be written about.”

Law and Order: Hate Crimes was ordered directly to series in September 2018. It’s expected to have a 13-episode first season whenever it does premiere.
