What happened in Chicago Med season 5 for Daniel Charles

For the majority of this Chicago Med season, Dr. Charles continued to play a supporting role. He was brought in whenever there was a case that required a psych consult, which resulted in the usual array of strange dilemmas for him to solve. Most notably he dealt with a patient who had decided to choose his medical treatment—or lack thereof—through social media.

Charles’ way of getting through to the man was to push him onto the hospital roof and show him that his army of followers didn’t really care about him; the majority of them wanted to see the patient jump off the roof to his death. After that stunt, Charles himself then became a social media sensation for a brief period.

His personal life provided his more memorable storylines. After he tied the knot with ex-wife Caroline (recurring guest star Paula Newsome) last season, the writers had her cancer come back and Caroline died off-screen after telling Daniel to remarry. Then Charles’ other ex-wife popped up to blame him for being a terrible father to their teenage daughter, who spent some time at the hospital toward the end of the season. His attempts to straighten her out and then to reconnect with her were where viewers left him as the season concluded.
