Heather Headley’s Sweet Magnolias renewed for season 2
Sweet Magnolias, starring Chicago Med’s Heather Headley, is renewed.
Chicago Med fans can continue watching Heather Headley on Netflix, as her new series Sweet Magnolias was renewed Thursday for season 2.
Award-winning actress and recording artist Headley has recurred as hospital administrator Gwen Garrett on Chicago Med. But while Gwen hasn’t been seen on the show for awhile, Headley has a much bigger role in the Netflix series.
She’s one of the three leads in Sweet Magnolias, which follows a group of friends who start their own business in a small South Carolina town. It’s based on novels by Sherryl Woods.

Headley plays Helen Decatur, an attorney who decides to open up a spa with her two closest friends, Maddie Townsend (Joanna Garcia Swisher) and Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott).
The series follows not only the group’s business venture, but also their romantic entanglements and personal issues.

In season 1, Helen dealt with an on-again, off-again relationship with her boyfriend Ryan (Michael Shenefelt), while also helping Maddie navigate her divorce from ex-husband Bill (Chris Klein), who had proposed to the woman he’d been cheating on Maddie with.
Presumably Sweet Magnolias season 2 will see all of the characters move forward in their various romantic lives, while continuing to try and grow the business they established.
Of course, what does that mean for Heather Headley’s future in the One Chicago universe? Being the lead on another series may impact her ability to reprise her role as Gwen Garrett next season.
However, Gwen hasn’t been a prominent character for awhile now. She only appeared once in the latest season, as the writers moved away from her conflicts with Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) and the hospital staff. There doesn’t seem to be a storyline for her, and she was never completely developed beyond being a confrontational bureaucrat.
Regardless of what happens to her, fans should give Heather Headley’s newest show a look just to see how talented she truly is. The first season is still streaming on Netflix and it shows a whole other side of her acting abilities with more comedy and a more vulnerable character. It’s breezy, light entertainment and the series coming back for a second season means we’ll get more Heather even if we don’t get more Gwen.
