Matt Olmstead exits Stumptown; what’s next for Chicago PD producer?

Matt Olmstead, the co-creator of Chicago PD, is no longer the co-showrunner of ABC‘s Stumptown.

During this weekend’s Comic-Con At Home, ABC announced that Monica Owusu-Breen (whose credits include NBC‘s supernatural drama Midnight, Texas) was replacing Olmstead on the Cobie Smulders series.

One Chicago fans will be more interested in the news because of what it means for Olmstead, who produced Chicago Fire before creating spinoff Chicago PD with Dick Wolf.

His Stumptown departure isn’t unexpected because Matt Olmstead is rumored to be the showrunner for Law & Order: Organized Crime, the upcoming spinoff featuring Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler.

Nothing has officially been announced in that respect, but Olmstead leaving his current job would certainly make sense if he were going to run the Stabler series.

The writer-producer oversaw Chicago PD until 2017, when he left the series to pursue other opportunities. Olmstead had been attached to an NYPD Blue revival that didn’t go forward, then executive produced ABC’s short-lived The Crossing before ending up on Stumptown.

If he is indeed leaving to work on Organized Crime, the move would also potentially bring him back into the One Chicago universe—as the Law & Order and One Chicago franchises have crossed over in the past. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to have Olmstead write a crossover episode, and he’d be well suited for the behind-the-scenes coordination that it takes to pull such events off.

Fans will have to wait and see if NBC announces his participation in the Stabler-centric show now that he’s no longer tied to Stumptown.
