Away trailer sends Chicago Med’s Ato Essandoh to Mars
Netflix’s Away trailer features Chicago Med alum Ato Essandoh.
Netflix has released the official Away trailer, giving One Chicago fans their first chance to see Ato Essandoh as a history-making astronaut.
The drama series is created by Andrew Hinderaker (Pure Genius). It follows the first crewed mission to Mars, through the eyes of the mission’s commander Emma Green (played by two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank).
Essandoh, who has recurred on Chicago Med as cardiothoracic surgery chief Dr. Isidore Latham, is a series regular as one of the astronauts on Green’s team.

He works alongside Russian engineer Misha Popov (Mark Ivanir), Indian pilot Ram Arya (Ray Panthaki), and Chinese chemist Lu Wang (Vivian Wu).
Away also stars Josh Charles (The Good Wife) and Talitha Bateman as Emma Green’s husband Matt Logan and their daughter Lex respectively, and Monique Curnen (The Unusuals, Taken) as ex-astronaut turned support team member Melissa Ramirez.
But for Chicago Med fans, the draw will be Ato Essandoh, who from the Away trailer looks to have a substantial role in the series—much larger than what we’ve been able to see from Dr. Latham in the last few seasons.
He’s surrounded by some other remarkable actors, too, which will give him that much more to play off of (and is super-important since the show takes place largely in the confines of a space shuttle, so there will be limitations on how far the writing can go).
The downside, of course, is that you’ll need a Netflix subscription to watch the show this fall. But with several series on Netflix that involve One Chicago actors—like Charlie Barnett in Russian Doll and You, and Wil Traval in Messiah—it’s a good investment especially if you need something new to dive into.
Watch the Away trailer below and let us know if it has you excited to see the full first season when the series premieres on Sept. 4.
