Chicago Fire’s Kim Delaney has joined the General Hospital cast.

Kim Delaney, who previously guest starred on Chicago Fire, has closed a deal to join the daytime soap opera General Hospital according to a new report from Deadline.

No details were given about Delaney’s General Hospital character or for how many episodes she’s contracted. The report does say she started filming yesterday and her episodes could start airing before the end of the month.

The actress is known to One Chicago fans for her role as Jennifer Sheridan, Kelly Severide’s (Taylor Kinney) mother and Benny Severide’s (Treat Williams) ex-wife.

She appeared in two season 6 episodes and then returned for the Chicago Fire season 7 episode “What Will Define You” when the series focused on Benny’s death and his funeral.

Jennifer did not appear in season 8 and as of now, there’s no indication that she’ll be in any season 9 installments either.

But Kim Delaney’s first television role was portraying Jenny Gardner in the soap opera All My Children from 1981-1984. She was nominated at the Daytime Emmy Awards in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category for the part.

This will be the first time she’s returned to the world of soaps since; her following roles have been in primetime dramas, including her Primetime Emmy Award-winning work as Det. Diane Russell in NYPD Blue, the first ten episodes of CSI: Miami as Megan Donner, and two episodes appearing on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

It’s hard to say if this will affect her One Chicago role, since Jennifer’s character arc seems to be wrapped up already. Plus, based on where Severide’s storylines have gone recently, there’s no real need for his family to make reappearances at the moment. Everything seems to be resolved for him in that department.

However, viewers went years without seeing Katie Nolan (Brittany Curran) before she returned for Benny’s service, so it’s possible that we might see Jennifer pop up in later seasons. With the length of time Kim Delaney will be on General Hospital unclear, she should hopefully be available by the time Fire producers think about revisiting her character.
