Chicago Fire season 9 casts Adriyan Rae as new paramedic
Chicago Fire’s new paramedic will be played by Adriyan Rae.
Chicago Fire has found Annie Ilonzeh’s replacement. Adriyan Rae is joining Chicago Fire season 9 as the NBC show’s latest series regular.
Rae will take on the role of paramedic Gianna Mackey, who becomes Sylvie Brett’s (Kara Killmer) third partner on Ambulance 61.
According to the character description provided to Deadline, the new arrival is a “loveable troublemaker with a twinkle in her eye.” Other words used to describe her include “scrappy” and “charming.”

“Gianna comes from a family of working-class parents who are adored by their community. This makes Gianna welcoming and friendly individual who treats everyone like family,” the description continues.

“But don’t get it twisted; she’s no pushover,” it adds. “She’s tough and quick to defend the defenseless, isn’t afraid of a little chaos and rolls with the punches while approaching everything with a bit of wry humor.”
Rae previously played the main character in the SyFy series Vagrant Queen, which was cancelled after one season in June; you can see some of her in that role by watching the trailer below to get an idea of what she’ll bring to the One Chicago franchise:
Adriyan Rae has also been seen in episodes of Atlanta, Star, and Brockmire. The Chicago role will be her first procedural.
What’s noteworthy is that Rae is being immediately reported as a series regular. The past actors who have been added to the Chicago shows, including her predecessor Annie Ilonzeh, were first billed as recurring cast members—although they quickly had their options picked up. This time, viewers know from the get-go that Adriyan Rae will be sticking around Chicago Fire.
What we don’t know is when she may make her first appearance. Due to season 8 being cut short, it’s not known yet if Ilonzeh will return to give Foster a proper send-off. If so, it’s possible that we may not see Rae’s character Gianna for an episode or two.
However, if the show skips ahead and has Foster leave off-camera, then Gianna Mackey could very well be in the Nov. 11 Chicago Fire season 9 premiere.
