Chicago Fire season 9 has started production.

The upcoming season of Chicago Fire is now underway.

One Chicago Center has confirmed initial media reports that the One Chicago franchise’s flagship series is returning to production today after an extended hiatus caused by the COVID-19 crisis.

Cast and crew are returning to work while NBC continues to target a Wednesday, November 11 premiere date for Chicago Fire season 9.

The news comes less than two weeks after Chicago Med restarted with an eye toward the same premiere date. The medical drama went back to work on Sept. 22, but is currently on hiatus due to crew members testing positive for COVID-19.

Chicago Fire is the One Chicago franchise’s longest-running show, and is undergoing a few major changes for season 9.

It should also reach its 200th episode in the upcoming season—though NBC no longer comments publicly about episode counts, the show has aired 187 episodes meaning that it would only need 13 episodes this season to reach 200.

In the ninth season, Chicago Fire will replace paramedic Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) with Gianna Mackey, a new paramedic played by Adriyan Rae (formerly of SyFy’s Vagrant Queen). Ilonzeh was not brought back by producers after two seasons and the stage was set for Foster to leave when the season 8 finale saw her interviewing for a return to medical school.

Daniel Kyri also joins the main cast after two seasons as firefighter Darren Ritter. The rest of the main cast is returning from last season.

No plot details have been revealed as yet but the series will no doubt return with a massive event as Fire normally has season premieres and finales with huge rescues or major plot reveals. We do know that the series will incorporate the COVID-19 pandemic into its reality.
