Chicago PD season 8 has started production.

Next season of Chicago PD has officially taken its first steps.

One Chicago Center has confirmed initial media reports that Chicago PD season 8 is beginning production today as the show works toward the Wednesday, November 11 premiere date set for the Chicago franchise.

The police drama returns to work on the same day as its parent series Chicago Fire.

More from Chicago PD

Chicago Med was the first of the franchise to start production back on Sept. 22, but it was also recently shut down after having two of its crew members test positive for COVID-19.

Of the three shows, Chicago PD is the one that’s experienced the most changes over the extended hiatus.

Producers opted not to bring back newest cast member Lisseth Chavez after only one season as Officer Vanessa Rojas; as of now, her replacement has not been named but multiple new people are expected to be introduced in season 9.

Meanwhile, Empire actress Nicole Ari Parker was brought on as the show’s latest recurring player. Her character Samantha Miller will be introduced as the Chicago Police Department’s new Deputy Superintendent.

Parker’s character is part of a planned storyline about police reform, which will be the second time that the show has tackled the issue.

The plotlines will likely face increased scrutiny anyway as much has changed regarding the police and people’s views on the police since the series went off the air in the spring. With arguments to defund the police and about officer-involved violence in the headlines almost every day, this show may look different to viewers now than it did just a few months ago.

The introduction of the Miller character suggests that Rick Eid and company will tackle the issue head-on; however, we’ll have to see if that’s what actually plays out.
