Chicago Fire season 9 character preview: Matthew Casey
What will happen
With no massive unresolved question for Casey at the end of this season—we’re not wondering if he’s going to survive jumping off another rooftop or anything crazy—his season 9 feels very wide open. Expect that the show will continue to push his unresolved romantic tension with Brett while she leans on him again; after all, she’s got yet another new partner and she might still be dealing with family issues depending on when the season picks up time-wise.
The show has long relied on conflict between Casey and Severide to create some on-the-job drama, particularly in the last few seasons now that there is a rank difference between them. It’d be no surprise if they butt heads in at least one episode (though they may also wind up burying the hatchet in the same episode, like what happened in season 8).
Other than that, Casey will continue being the deputy supervisor of Firehouse 51 and keeping things moving, whether it’s dealing with office politics, actual politics, or spats between the rest of the team. He’s always been the steadiest character on the show and there’s no reason to believe that will change next season. If he didn’t go completely crazy in season 7 with everything that happened there, he’s not going to start acting out now.
