What will happen

Burgess will probably still have screen time issues next season. Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) has become the show’s female lead, and Chicago PD season 8 also has the ongoing Upstead plot that it’s working toward. In addition, whoever the series introduces to fill Rojas’ spot, then it has to start all over again with establishing that character(s)—which means devoting a certain amount of screen time to them.

The good news for Kim fans is that the series appears committed to resurrecting the Burzek relationship so there shouldn’t be another breakup in their future. While it was a bit weird to have him in a fling with that bartender when Adam was rebuilding things with Kim, that might be the exception rather than the rule based on how the seventh season ended. It’ll be good for Burgess to have some stability in that sense.

But what’s her storyline? That part’s still muddled. Rick Eid had teased that Burgess might take the detective’s exam last season and she didn’t (no one did). It would be nice to see someone be promoted to detective, and Atwater probably won’t be considered since he’s just ticked off a big portion of the Chicago Police Department, so why not Kim? She needs a plot that isn’t tied to her personal life and that would be a good one.
