In this article, we’re profiling April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta).

Where we left off

The fifth season of Chicago Med focused heavily on April’s relationship with Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee). Having gotten back together again, the duo were quickly thrown into turmoil, both by taking things a bit too fast and an unexpected third wheel.

Choi was suddenly keen to have a child with April, but the two of them found out that it wasn’t an easy proposition. April, who’d already suffered a miscarriage in a prior season, struggled to get pregnant. At one point, desperate to make Ethan happy, she doubled up on her fertility medication and landed herself in the Emergency Department as a result.

But that wasn’t what ultimately drove them into another breakup. The show’s new arrival, Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains), worked with April on a case and took an immediate interest in her. Crockett tried to kiss April at a party, and while she walked away, she didn’t explicitly tell him she had a boyfriend. Then, after getting fed up with Ethan, it was April who kissed Crockett—and hid it from Ethan until the aforementioned ED stint.

Ethan broke off his engagement with April almost as quickly as he’d proposed, and they stopped living together. But the season 5 finale showed April still openly pining for Choi. She rushed to the scene of his hostage situation…only for Choi to walk away from her once he saw her there.
