In this article, we’re profiling Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins).
Where we left off
Chicago PD season 7 started slow for Atwater, but it picked up significantly with the impromptu season finale.
In the show’s second episode an undercover Atwater met his future partner, Officer Vanessa Rojas (Lisseth Chavez). Most of their interactions during the season were Kevin trying to explain to her how things work in the Intelligence Unit; producers floated the idea that they might become a new ship, but that never happened.
Instead Atwater once again became the Chicago PD character dealing with issues of race, as well as going undercover a few more times. In “Silence of the Night” he found himself teamed up with the cop who had racially profiled him during season 6, and though the man seemed to have had a change of heart, Atwater still objected to the way he treated potential suspects.
After the man’s death in the line of duty, Kevin was torn between keeping quiet so as not to upset a dead cop’s memory or telling the truth about his behavior. He spoke to former Alderman Ray Price (returning guest star Wendell Pierce) and ultimately decided to come forward, which ended season 7 with several police officers swarming Atwater’s neighborhood in a clear warning. In turn, Kevin invited them to come after him—which they almost certainly will.
