Chicago Fire, Chicago Med reveal new Female Forward directors
Chicago Fire as well as Chicago Med will feature new female directors.
More new directors are joining the One Chicago universe as part of NBC‘s Female Forward initiative to showcase women behind the camera. Chicago Med and Chicago Fire have both announced new directors.
Kantú Lentz will direct an upcoming episode of Chicago Fire while Afia Nathaniel will direct a future installment of Chicago Med.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s not known if we’ll see them make their One Chicago debuts during the upcoming season that starts in November or if they’ll have to wait until the next season (season 10 and season 7 respectively).

So who are these new directors?
Kantú Lentz is a Peruvian filmmaker, and her short film Jack and Jo Don’t Want to Die recently had its premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival. She’s currently working on a full-length version of the movie, which starred Justin Kirk (APB) and Olivia Edward.
According to her official Female Forward biography, Lentz “creates films that take place in alternate realities with magical realism elements,” so it’ll be interesting to see how her style meshes with the usually gritty world of Chicago Fire.

Afia Nathaniel is a Pakistani-American writer and director whose debut film Dukhtar was Pakistan’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2014. It was also a winner of several other awards and played in almost two dozen countries around the world.
More recently, she is working to adapt the Marina Budhos novel Watched for television, and also teaches both directing and screenwriting at Temple University.
The NBC Female Forward program has brought a number of talented directors into the One Chicago franchise since its inception, including Christine Swanson (Chicago PD), Olivia Newman (Chicago Fire), and last season Brenna Malloy (Chicago Fire) and SJ Main Munoz (Chicago Med).
Between them, they’ve directed some of the best episodes of their respective seasons—for example, it was Olivia Newman who directed the Fire installment “What Will Define You” that featured Benny Severide’s funeral, and Brenna Malloy who helmed last season’s fantastic Fire hour “Protect A Child.”
Both Swanson and Newman went on to also direct episodes of Dick Wolf‘s FBI in addition to their Chicago shows, and former Chicago Fire star Monica Raymund is a Female Forward alumnus who was behind the camera for an episode of Wolf’s Law & Order: SVU.
