1) The new paramedic will make an immediate impact
Season 9 introduces Gianna Mackey (played by Adriyan Rae), who replaces Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) on Ambulance 61. Expect that Gianna is going to do something stupendous within her first shift or two at Firehouse 51.
This is just a simple bit of TV procedure. The writers of any show want their audience to like a new character, so they have that character do something important or impressive, which gets them embraced by the other characters. The logic is that if the other characters on the show like the new person, the fans will, too.
We’ve seen that in the One Chicago universe over the years, including with Foster—who performed emergency surgery in the field on one of her early calls—and Vanessa Rojas on Chicago PD. So look for Gianna to do something big that gets her new partner’s attention, though whether or not the fans will be as interested obviously remains to be seen.

2) The Brett and Casey situation will come to a head
Things between Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) have been going in circles for multiple seasons now. They got sidetracked by her engagement and her mother, and his one-night stand with his ex-wife. One has to think that Chicago Fire has run out of ways for them not to acknowledge each other.
This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to get together or stay together; who knows if the writers have changed their minds since they first began to tease Brett and Casey as a couple, or the characters could date and end up being terrible for each other. They both are prone to impulsive romantic decisions. But the show will address the subject this season, finally allowing them—and the audience—to get around the elephant in the room that’s been there so long it moved in.
3) Boden will continue to promote Stella
One of the big storylines in season 8 was Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) getting pushed forward professionally by Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker). Though the two agreed to slow down the hype train, we don’t think Boden has changed his mind about Stella deserving a higher profile.
That’s because this is one of the rare professional moves that Chicago Fire can make. Firehouse 51 already has three officers, since Boden previously promoted Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) to Lieutenant. There aren’t going to be any openings on that level for a while, because that would require the house expanding—unlikely since it’s often faced budget troubles or other threats—or someone leaving.
Plus, Stella is the show’s only female firefighter, so there’s a certain plus for the writers in building her up and giving her a bigger role at 51. While Chicago Fire has plenty of female characters, all of the top-ranking people at the firehouse are men. Moving a female character up, even if not in rank, gives the firehouse better representation in that respect. So look for more Stella, even if she might be resistant to the idea at first.
