Chicago Fire season 9 premiere preview: Rattle Second City
Preview the Chicago Fire season 9 premiere.
Everyone’s excited because Chicago Fire is back after a longer than usual hiatus, and while this season premiere isn’t the show’s biggest—we’re not waiting to find out if somebody lives or dies this time—there’s still a lot to be excited about.
“Rattle Second City” will be most discussed because of the change on Ambulance 61. Fans know that Annie Ilonzeh exited the show between seasons, with the road being paved for her departure when her character Emily Foster decided to reapply to medical school.
No one knows if Foster will get an on-screen goodbye or even a mention in this episode, but all eyes will be on Adriyan Rae, who makes her debut as Foster’s replacement Gianna Mackey.

As is the case with most TV shows, One Chicago fans will be comparing Mackey to Foster, and seeing if they like the new character. Expectations will be high, and the writers will no doubt throw Mackey right into the fire—because they’ll want her to impress viewers, but also because this show always does something big to start off its season.

Because of that, the key character to watch in the Chicago Fire premiere is Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer). Brett is now on her third partner, and both of her previous two have chosen to leave. She was pretty upset when Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund) quit, but seemed more at peace with Foster’s decision. So will she take the change in stride this time? Or will she hold Mackey at arm’s length, not wanting to get close to someone else who might leave again?
Plus, there’s still not been a resolution between Brett and Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), who kept going in circles with each other last season while Casey had a one-night stand with Dawson. Will the show continue to tease that it in this first episode back, or maybe finally push that train further down the tracks?
On the lighter side, hopefully there will be a good comedic subplot for Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende) and Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri). Rosende is in his second season, so Chicago Fire should be exploring Gallo further, and now that Kyri has been promoted to series regular it’s easy to team those two up again. Almost every episode has some kind of funny B-story and this one would be ripe for more Gallo and Ritter adventures.
