Wednesday’s first episode comes after a season 8 cliffhanger in which Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) made enemies throughout the Chicago Police Department by testifying about another cop. That subject will be addressed in this installment, which is titled “Fighting Ghosts,” but there are also other plotlines at the forefront.

The show is introducing a new Deputy Superintendent, Samantha Miller, portrayed by actress Nicole Ari Parker (who recently had a major role on FOX‘s Empire). Miller comes into Chicago as a major proponent of police reform, which means that she will immediately butt heads with Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). After all, Voight is pretty much the walking example of what people are talking about when they discuss the issue of reform. But people have tried to get Voight to change before, and it’s never worked out, so how will Miller be any different?
