Crockett and Natalie

Even with all this stuff going on, Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) has time to joke with Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) about her new living arrangements; she’s moved out of her house to keep from exposing her son Owen to COVID-19. Natalie treats a young girl who’s just finished her last round of leukemia treatments. She thinks Kellie’s medication is damaging her heart.

Crockett briefly treats a teenager who’s been shot—as in we see the kid once and he’s never seen nor mentioned again—and then is a bit annoyed that Natalie didn’t want to page him about Kellie, because he lost his own child to leukemia (as was revealed in the season 5 finale). “What you just did?” he snarks. “That’s why I don’t tell people about my past.”

The two inform Kellie’s father that tests have revealed her leukemia has returned, making the heart issue even more pressing. Crockett recommends surgery to implant an LVAD, but Natalie is skeptical, especially since what he’s suggesting is usually only done on adults. Kellie’s dad agrees with Natalie, but Crockett tells her that she talked him out of an operation that Kellie needs.

Kellie subsequently crashes, so Natalie changes her mind and they proceed with the surgery. She apologizes to Crockett for not trusting his judgment and in turn, he admits that she wasn’t wrong about how leukemia cases affect him. Chicago Med gives its newest regular a rare and appreciated emotional moment as he tells Natalie that “you’re doing the right thing.”

Natalie’s story ends with her having a video chat with Owen, who’s in the care of his grandmother. At least Chicago Med remembered him this season!
