Introduced in season 5, Jessy Schram joined the Chicago Med cast as Dr. Hannah Asher, a gynecological surgeon on the hospital staff with a secret drug problem. The character’s storyline quickly became entangled with Dr. Will Halstead’s (Nick Gehlfuss), with the two first meeting at an illegal safe injection site and developing quite the interesting relationship as the season progressed.

Over the course of season 5, we watched as Hannah battled her addiction with Halstead at her side as a driving force of support throughout the process. By the season’s end, the pair’s relationship evolved into something more with Will and Hannah becoming romantically involved in a pairing that seemed destined not to end well.

How did Chicago Med write off Jessy Schram’s Dr. Hannah Asher?

As Chicago Med season 6 kicked off, we watched as Hannah was admitted to the hospital and quickly found out that she had fallen off the wagon, overdosing after a fight with Will.

While Hannah received treatment, Will realized that he should have heeded Dr. Daniel Charles’s (Oliver Platt) warning about not getting involved with Hannah. After careful consideration, Will decided that it was best for both he and Hannah if they went their separate ways noting he couldn’t be what was keeping her sober.

Rather than remaining in the Windy City and living with a reputation as the addict doctor, Hannah decided to move to Los Angeles to get a fresh start.

Why did Jessy Schram leave Chicago Med?

Although in the past, the creative teams have addressed character exits with explanations behind why a given actor/character was written out of the show, there is no definitive answer as to why Jessy Schram left Chicago Med. 

If we had to guess, her exit likely was the result of the character’s story running its course. Sure, the writers could have had Hannah stick around and work her recovery throughout season 6, it makes sense for the show want to tie up the loose end as it looks to focus on pandemic-related storylines.

Will Jessy Schram return to Chicago Med?

Given the writers did not kill Hannah off, the door absolutely remains open for Jessy Schram to return to the show down the line for a special guest appearance or perhaps even a guest arc. However, at this point, it’s too soon to tell when Jessy might return to the One Chicago franchise.
