Chicago Fire season 9, episode 2 preview: That Kind of Heat
Chicago Fire season 9, episode 2 preview.
When Chicago Fire returns tomorrow night on NBC, it will be resolving a big cliffhanger, but maybe not in the way One Chicago fans think.
“That Kind of Heat” will no doubt open with the crash that saw Ambulance 61 get not only run off the road, but run off a bridge, by the enraged brother of a man who overdosed and later died.
However, let’s state the obvious: the show is almost certainly not going to kill anyone off. There’s no indication that Kara Killmer is leaving the series, and Adriyan Rae just got here, so Brett and her new partner should both survive.

That doesn’t mean Derek Haas and company can’t injure them or find some other way to make their lives worse, though. There are a lot of other degrees of bad before character death.
That results in two follow-up questions: how will Gianna Mackey handle what has to be the worst first day on the job ever? She’s proven to be pretty strong so far, but will that continue?
And how will Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) react when the rest of Firehouse 51 hears the news, since he was already worried about Brett when they had their first encounter with their assailant?
Based on the Brett and Casey scenes in the Chicago Fire season premiere, it seems like these two are making bigger steps toward a relationship this season than they did in season 7 or 8. Could a second close call in short order be the writers building toward finally paying that off?
Another storyline to keep an eye on involves Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri). The photos for this episode show that Ritter gets into some heroics during the case of the week, and that will be a lot of fun to watch. Ritter as a character has grown a lot since he joined Firehouse 51 two seasons ago, and because he’s been recurring, we haven’t seen the full extent of what Daniel Kyri can do, either.
“That Kind of Heat” is going to show us more of both character and actor, in addition to resolving the cliffhanger, and don’t be surprised to see another Chicago PD cameo since the cops will have to be getting involved. This will be a busy episode!
