One Chicago dramas to be preempted January 20, 2021: Here’s why

NBC’s One Chicago dramas might have only just returned with their first new episodes of the new year, but yet another break is already on its way for Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD!

As you might have noticed in the promotional materials for the next episodes, One Chicago will be taking Wednesday, January 20 off before returning the following week with a fresh batch of episodes. Given the shows only just returned, it’s understandable to question why exactly the series will be preempted for yet another week.

First, it’s important to keep in mind that last Wednesday night’s preemption was not a planned break by NBC. Rather, the decision to preempt the episodes was made to make way for NBC News coverage connected to the events that unfolded at the U.S. Capitol earlier that day.

Originally, the plan was for new episodes to air on Jan. 6 and Jan. 13 before taking a week off on Jan. 20 to make way for special coverage of the 2021 inauguration — which is set to take place, you guessed it, Jan. 20.

In an effort to make way for coverage of the Presidential Inauguration, NBC will be preempting all three One Chicago dramas next week to provide viewers with news and updates connected to the Inauguration.

The good news is that we won’t have to wait long for new episodes of Chicago Fire, Med, and PD! After taking the week off for the Inauguration, all three series will be back with new episodes on Wednesday, Jan. 27!
