Will and Maggie

Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has officially started working on his clinical trial with Dr. Virani (returning guest star Tehmina Sunny). He’s excited at what he sees as a potential “game-changer,” but does he mean for his patients or for him?

He proposes that the patient try out his new experimental heart failure drug, and the man consents. Maggie notes that the patient’s a bit wary, though, and asks Will if he’s sure that the man knows what he agreed to.

Later on, the patient’s daughter arrives and doesn’t want her father participating in the trial, even though Will has already administered the first dose. She insists that Will call another doctor to evaluate him for surgery instead. He chooses not to do that, which causes the woman to blow up on him and Maggie to give him a stern talking-to.

While they’re arguing, the daughter tries to physically remove her father from his ED bed, which prompts him to go into cardiac arrest. “This is your fault,” the woman sobs while Will gets his pulse back. She then slaps Will just to make clear how she feels.

Shocking no one, Chicago Med reveals that Will has been thrown off the case. But he still tells the daughter that he knows how to save her father, and Maggie convinces her to trust him anyway. That is no small ask since he’s demonstrated a flagrant ignorance of her wishes already, yet Will still has an opportunity to be the hero.

In true Chicago Med fashion, Will is able to pull things off at the near-last second, much to everyone’s relief. He gets a hug from the patient’s daughter, even though he has to tell her that the procedure they just performed disqualifies her father from the clinical trial.
