Upstead’s big moment

Chicago PD cuts to Halstead and Upton interrogating the gang member who had an issue with the father. He claims he’d never go after the family because the girl is “protected” and “if I go near her, I end up dead.” Yep, the big plot twist is that the dad who was killed is not the child’s actual father. Her real dad is a guy with an even longer rap sheet, who got out of prison just three days earlier.

Dad and his new girlfriend become the prime suspects, and the latter is easily arrested. Voight spells things out for her in hopes that she’ll give up her boyfriend. When that doesn’t work, he decides to put the girl in front of a lineup. After a moment of panic when the girl recognizes the woman’s voice, Burgess is able to get a positive ID. The girlfriend lawyers up and Burgess is totally fine with that, telling her that she’ll be sent to Indiana…where there’s a death row.

Facing the threat of a possible death sentence, the girlfriend cracks and gives up her boyfriend. All of Intelligence lies in wait so the man is vastly outnumbered. Burgess demands that he surrender for his daughter’s sake and he does, while asking if he’ll actually see his kid again. “I sure as hell hope not,” Burgess replies.

That night Chicago PD has her reflect again on her pregnancy from last season. Ruzek tells Burgess she would’ve been good at being both a cop and a mom. They agree to meet at the bar but not before Burgess says goodbye to the girl, who’s picked up by an extended family member.

The last scene takes place at some other bar, where Upton tells Halstead that the FBI wants her to do “all interrogations” of “high-level targets.” They discuss whether or not she should take the job. He tells her he wants her to do whatever she wants to do. She admits that she doesn’t want to take the job because of him. “I’m better because of you as my partner,” she says.

After dragging this out a few more moments, the two of them start making out. Upstead is officially a thing. Discuss amongst yourselves how you feel about this—and how everyone else will feel about it when it probably comes out in the next episode.
