Why isn’t Chicago PD new tonight, January 20? Find out why a new episode of Chicago PD isn’t on NBC this week and when the show will resume season 8.
One Chicago fans expecting a new installment (and a chance to find out what happens after that big Halstead and Upton moment) will be disappointed to find out that this Wednesday’s hour is a rerun. NBC is airing an encore showing of the season 7 finale, “Silence of the Night,” in which Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) was reunited with an old enemy—and ended up making enemies of a whole lot of other cops.
What’s the reason for the repeat? The majority of the network’s One Chicago franchise is being preempted this week for coverage of the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. NBC is airing the inauguration ceremony at 8:00 p.m. followed by a special called Celebrating America hosted by Tom Hanks and featuring musical performances. That special ends at 9:30.

NBC always likes to keep its Chicago shows together as one block (it‘s in the name, after all) so they’ve chosen to put up a rerun rather than have a fresh episode of PD and nothing for the other two series.
Don’t worry too much, though, because things will be back to normal next week. On January 27, the next new installment is titled “Unforgiven” and sees Intelligence looking for a cop killer. Their prime suspect is a man with a lengthy grudge against the police department—but is the case that simple or will the suspect’s complaints about cops have merit?
Now that you know “Why isn’t Chicago PD new tonight?” you can find your pick of old episodes on NBC’s streaming service Peacock (though some seasons/episodes may require a paid subscription to watch). Other repeats are also airing in syndication, so check your local listings for specific info in your area.
