This week’s Chicago Fire was the first big Boden story of season 9, as the Chief (Eamonn Walker) went on a special assignment.

Wednesday’s episode “Funny What Things Remind Us” saw Boden and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) team up to investigate the mystery of a man found inside a condemned home.

Meanwhile, it didn’t take long for either Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) or Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) to find other love interests after calling time on their potential relationship.

The mystery man

Chicago Fire starts by giving fans an eyeful of Severide in the shower, which Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) points out is strange. She also thinks it’s weird that he still doesn’t really want to help her with her pending exam.

In the common room, after Brett and Casey share polite hellos, we find out that the latter is in charge for the day as Boden is off to clear out condemned buildings for the higher-ups. Severide volunteers to go with him, which also piques Stella’s radar. But she doesn’t get to ponder it too much because we have our first fire call of the week: the billboard has fallen off a truck and impaled a car with the driver trapped inside.

The driver ends up being fine, but she seems to charm Casey by making a joke about working at the strip club that the billboard was advertising. While Mouch (Christian Stolte) is cleaning up all the debris, he starts bantering with another firefighter named Chuck Rutledge—and Chuck’s lieutenant is quite obviously checking out Brett as she walks away. Everyone sees where this is going, right?

Back at Firehouse 51, Stella asks Mouch what his issue with Chuck is. Apparently Chuck stole his chair years ago at another firehouse, and Mouch pranked him for it; he also wants to put the other guy in his place again. Chicago Fire then shows Severide and Boden finding one of their condemned buildings not so empty. There’s a man inside who is very angry—and who promptly falls through the staircase. He refers to himself only by a number: 24198.

It’s a mystery for Severide and Boden to solve!
