Chicago PD season 8, episode 4 recap: Unforgiven
Good or bad cop?
The duo drop Zach off (with a bunch of police waiting at his home) and then get a call about a new witness. While waiting for that person, Hailey finds another gun that turns out to be the actual murder weapon. That gives them a second suspect named Maria Guerra. But when they arrest her, Maria tells Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) and Ruzek that Blaine saved her life. She’s the mystery woman!
She explains that her ex-boyfriend Jose took her gun and murdered Blaine after Blaine came to her defense. The money was given to her to get away from Jose. Chicago PD has Burgess suggest that Intelligence could use Zach to get to Jose. But while Upton and Halstead are trying to talk to Zach again, someone tries to commit a drive-by. Zach does have the courtesy to thank them for saving his life, but still doesn’t want to cooperate.
Halstead and Upton then locate Jose’s truck, but after Upton tries to confront him on her own, he takes a hostage. Luckily Halstead isn’t too far behind and is able to disarm Jose and take him into custody. Ruzek then shows Voight camera footage of Jose dumping the murder weapon just minutes after the murder. Voight takes the whole file—good and bad—to Miller and asks what she’s going to do.
She rattles off all the things Blaine did wrong, and Voight points out that the man died trying to do something good. “There was a time we actually forgave people for their mistakes,” he retorts. While he’s arguing the point, Upton and Halstead tell Maria that Jose is behind bars, and Upton informs her partner/boyfriend that she’s going to the hospital to be with her dad.
This Chicago PD episode winds down with Miller giving her speech about Blaine. She talks about how he died “trying to do what was right” and stealing a phrase from Voight about “the sum of the parts.” She also acknowledges that the CPD has made some “mistakes” and done some “unforgiveable acts.”
Her speech is laid over Blaine’s widow getting a final salute from the officers at the 21st District, and Upton watching her father from outside his hospital room. Halstead returns to find Upton drinking, though she does say she’s glad she talked to her dad.
