Will and April

Aside from arguing with Choi over her brother, April also came into conflict with Will, who it should be noted was seen receiving the COVID-19 vaccine at the top of this Chicago Med episode. That’s a timely scene.

April is surprised to see her patient who had beaten COVID-19 earlier in the season return to the hospital fearing that he still had long-term damage from the coronavirus. Will runs some tests and deduces that the man has heart failure; April thinks that means Will can use him as a patient in his clinical trial, but Will has to break the news to her that he doesn’t qualify.

She doesn’t take this well; instead she runs more tests and tries to convince Will that the man is indeed eligible. When Dr. Halstead still refuses to admit the man based on a technicality about preserving the data so that the trial is valid, April then makes the situation a racial issue, asking Will how many of the patients in the trial are African-American. She implies that the trial is biased against Black patients.

Later on, April finds out that the patient has been administered fluids under Will’s orders. Those fluids have changed his status just enough that he’s now a trial candidate. She thanks Will for the assist, and Will thanks her in return—the unspoken part being for making him aware of the racial disparity. For those keeping score, that means April has pushed ethics issues twice in this hour, and come out on top both times.
