Burgess makes her choice

After the girl is taken to the hospital, a search of the house uncovers the other two suspects’ ID cards and Ruzek is able to identify the john wo beat the girl by figuring out who owns the car outside. But he’s also been beaten—and killed—by the time they find him. That leaves our team once again with just Miguel, who still won’t cooperate. Voight decides to charge him with everything, which frustrates Burgess who argues the offenders are kids failed by the system.

She also finds out that Kathy filed a complaint against her with DCFS for coming to her home earlier. The social worker explains that Kathy has mental issues, so they’re moving Makayla into a group home. Kim offers to foster her instead; the social worker points to a long list of possible problems, including that Burgess is white wanting to foster a black child and that she may not be “committed.”

Chicago PD skips ahead to the next day so Ruzek and Burgess can realize the other two suspects are hitchhiking via semi trucks. After going through the injured girl’s journal, Burgess deduces they’re on their way to Atlanta, but she coerces Miguel (with a note that only he can see) to say they’re headed to Iowa instead.

After putting out this piece of misinformation she tells Atwater that she looked up the girl she saved in “I Was Here” and found out the girl went missing shortly after that. She asks him about bringing home Makayla; Atwater says it will be a huge challenge for all the reasons mentioned before, but that if she loves Makayla, it’ll be good.

So Burgess tracks down Ruzek and informs him of her intention to take in Makayla. “It’s possible it could become a more permanent situation,” she says. He reminds her that she can’t replace their lost child but she insists that she’s motivated by genuine feelings for Makayla. Ruzek says it won’t change their relationship, but admits he worries that she can’t stand the idea of seeing another kid lost.

The episode winds down as Kim, now alone, waits to pick up Makayla. The girl agrees to come home with her and Burgess gets her first parenting lesson on how to use a car seat. Although she seems happy as she leaves, a moment later it also appears to sink in.
