This week’s Chicago PD was centered on Jay Halstead, who found himself crossing an ethical line in pursuit of a killer.

Wednesday’s episode “Equal Justice” involved Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) getting close to the father of a murder victim. While Intelligence chased the drug dealer presumed to be responsible for the killing, Halstead had his hands full with the dad, and ultimately made a choice that as Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) said, he’d have to live with for the rest of his life.

Chicago PD season 8, episode 6 recap

Chicago PD opens with everyone having waited six hours to act on information from one of Jay’s informants. They think they can bust a drug dealer named Dante responsible for more than two dozen overdoses, but the situation seems a little off. Our heroes follow the car to a local garage and stop the man inside who’s holding a ton of heroin. He says he’s the father of a murder victim named Sean Wade, and he’s working to find out who killed his son.

Halstead brings him back to the district and interviews Latrell Wade further, where the man explains the details he’s been able to uncover during his psuedo-undercover investigation into Dante’s gang. He also tearfully explains how he’s still haunted by his son’s ghost. Looking on, Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) tells Voight that she thinks Latrell is telling the truth; Voight says they can use him to take down Dante.

Upton and Halstead go to pick up the case file on Sean Wade from the original investigator and tell him about Latrell. The other cop says he feels bad for the man, but that they “exhausted all credible leads” the first time around. Halstead and Voight inform Latrell that he’s facing charges from holding heroin, and offer him a chance (sort of) to work with them as a “cooperating defendant.” Latrell reluctantly agrees after Voight tells him there’s a chance they could find Sean’s killer.
