Chicago Fire: What’s next for Mackey and Gallo?

Let’s be honest: nobody was shocked when Chicago Fire had Gianna Mackey (Adriyan Rae) and Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende) hook up this week. No One Chicago character seems to stay single for long, and Gallo had been interested in Mackey from her very first episode.

So now that they’re a couple, what happens next for the show’s two newest characters?

A big potential source of drama had been Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso), but Cruz has already found out about the hookup, so that’s crossed off the list already. There might be an issue in the fact that Gianna just wants to keep this “fun” between them—could it be possible that Gallo’s going to want more out of this relationship than she does?

The biggest danger, though, is actually coming from the writers’ room. If Chicago Fire focuses solely on Gallo and Mackey’s new relationship and forgets to keep developing them as individuals, it’s not going to be good for anybody.

Especially with Gianna, considering this is her first season, the audience needs to know more about her and why we should care, not just who she’s dating. One Chicago fans have seen what happens when a character never gets fleshed out beyond their romantic entanglement (see: Ava Bekker on Chicago Med).

Congratulations to these two for finally acknowledging their mutual interest—and then some—but their getting together wasn’t the hurdle. The hurdle is what the show is going to do with both of them after getting to that moment. Not only as a duo but as two characters who still have a lo to prove around Firehouse 51.
