Chicago Fire season 9, episode 7 preview: Dead of Winter
This week’s Chicago Fire is going back to two of the show’s most beloved story types—a Casey and Severide plot, and a plot in which one of them (or in this case both) gets to unravel some kind of mystery.
“Dead of Winter” centers on Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) doing some investigating after Firehouse 51 responds to a fire at a homeless encampment.
Over eight-plus seasons One Chicago viewers have seen several episodes where the members of 51 step outside their jobs to find out the truth about something, and usually those plotlines fall to Casey and particularly Severide.
Our heroes have become good at unraveling mysteries, whether it’s figuring out scams or finding the evidence behind what caused a fire. Severide even made a temporary career of it when he was working in the Office of Fire Investigation.

Chicago Fire season 9, episode 7 preview
The other important point this week—which might happen at that same fire or could be separate, according to the photos from this episode—is that Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) has a close call in the line of duty.
Aside from the usual shock that comes with a Chicago Fire character being in a potentially life-threatening situation (which also happens a lot on this show), this is a little bit more scary for viewers who know that Cruz is expecting his first child with wife Chloe (a so far unseen this season Kristen Gutoskie).
Plus, it happens just an episode after he was trapped in an elevator, so Cruz is riding a streak of bad luck at the moment. Will the two incidents happening so close together plus the knowledge of having a child that’s going to depend on him spook Cruz a little bit?
And on a lighter note, when will Cruz and Chloe’s baby news come out? Usually when someone has a secret on any TV show it doesn’t stay secret for long. Could it be something that gets blurted out after Cruz has this close call, or is it going to build through future episodes of season 9?
