This week’s Chicago Fire is hard to preview, because NBC has not released an official synopsis for tonight’s episode. But based on the clues we do have, it looks to be challenging.

The episode is called “Escape Route,” and the only thing One Chicago fans have to go on is the promo, which itself focuses on one single plot point—that Lieutenant Greg Grainger (recurring guest star Jon-Michael Ecker) is temporarily working at Firehouse 51.

Grainger is the firefighter who was immediately checking out Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) when they met a few episodes ago, and whom Brett formally asked out in the most recent episode.

It’s no spoiler to say that Grainger’s appearance doesn’t go over well with Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), Brett’s previous love interest with whom she still shares plenty of unresolved feelings.

The limited evidence makes it feel like this is an episode where the plot is built around a certain ship—in this case, the Brett/Casey/Grainger triangle—so it may not be as interesting if you’re not a fan of that ship or any of those characters.

But what will happen for the rest of the Firehouse 51 gang? They obviously have to have their own subplots, yet since there’s no synopsis, we don’t know exactly what they’ll be up to. With Grainger at 51, presumably one of the lieutenants won’t be.

Logically, that’ll probably mean Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) is MIA for most if not all of the episode, since Herrmann is easier to write around than Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney).

Will Severide’s plotline involve more of helping Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) prepare for her own possible promotion to lieutenant? Or will he go off on another call, the way he did a few episodes ago with Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker)?

This whole episode is a big question mark, but Brett fans, Casey fans and Casey and Brett shippers should definitely enjoy it.
