Chicago Med season 6, episode 9 recap: For the Want of a Nail
Will, April and Charles
Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) greet a patient who has a nail in her foot and a nasty wound on her head. But when Will tells her what hospital she’s in, Ramona is insistent that she was supposed to go to East Mercy Hospital instead—to the point where he has her restrained. Yep, something’s suspicious here.
Cue Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), who placates Ramona and convinces her to get a CT scan as a condition of her discharge. Charles wants to let her go, even though she’s got a bleed on her brain; Will disagrees but says he’ll schedule the transfer. Yet when April calls East Mercy, she finds out that Ramona is “obsessed” with one of the doctors there. He refuses to treat her any further; you can’t blame him since she accused him of malpractice and threatened to sue him before.
Our team huddles up to figure out how they’re going to convince her to receive treatment at Chicago Med. Charles breaks the news to Ramona, making it sound like the other doctor wants her to get her surgery there; she misconstrues that as the guy keeping her away because he’s in love with her, but at least she agrees.
After the surgery Charles talks to Ramona about the death of her father—the doctor she’s obsessed with is the one who tried to save him. He tells her that the man is not in love with her and he wants to put her on a psych hold. This makes Charles her new target, and she confronts him in the elevator, creepily telling him “you’re going to be the best doctor I’ve ever had.” Luckily for Daniel, security shows up in the nick of time.
Will is surprised to see Dr. Sabeena Virani (recurring guest star Tehmina Sunny) show up. She tells him that they no longer need patients for the clinical trial, because he’s found them plenty. This is not good news for April, who thought she had a perfect candidate for him. By the look on April’s face, Will may as well have run over her dog.
Maggie
This Chicago Med episode opened with Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) packing up some of Auggie’s belongings now that her foster son has been adopted elsewhere. Maggie takes the stuff to a local charity shop, where she decides to give one of Auggie’s blankets to a struggling mom named Tionne. But Maggie notices Tionne is bleeding and calls for an ambulance.
Cut to Tionne being treated by Natalie, who tells her that she needs surgery to deliver the baby immediately. When the baby is delivered, the operating team notices a sign of spina bifida. The news shocks Tionne, who blames herself for the birth defect. Maggie is shocked when she finds out Tionne has called DCFS, and tries to convince her not to give the baby up for adoption. That includes telling how she gave her own child up at 16 and regrets it now.
While watching Tionne with her baby (so we don’t get to know what decision she does ultimately make), Maggie tells Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) she wants to reconnect with her daughter. Goodwin isn’t as enthusiastic, pointing out that Maggie’s daughter may not want to meet her.
