As teased in Chicago Fire season 9, episode 9, “Double Red,” change is coming once again to Firehouse 51 with the departure of Gianna Mackey (Adriyan Rae).

In the episode, Mackey caught the eye of the CFD brass during a routine training session and was promptly offered a promotion to be Paramedic in Charge at Firehouse 33. After stewing over the offer during the episode, Mackey ultimately decided to accept the position thus setting the stage for the character’s exit.

While we’ve seen members of Firehouse 51 remain on the show despite a temporary relocation — take for example when Severide (Taylor Kinney) spent some time working at the Office of Fire Investigation in season 8 — the move for Mackey was related to Rae’s request to step away from the series.

In wake of Mackey’s departure, Firehouse 51 will be welcoming yet another new member to its ranks in Violet Lin (Hanako Greensmith), who Chicago Fire star Eamonn Walker is certain fans will take to quickly just as the Firehouse 51 has taken to Greensmith.

“She’s lovely,” Walker teased during NBC’s midseason press event, adding that “[Fans are] going to love her” thanks in large part to the character’s introduction in 8 as part of the character’s love affair with 51 favorite Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende).

While Walker teased the cast has “taken to her” and promises the character’s introduction is “going to be fantastic,” fellow castmate David Eigenberg seemed to confirm many fans’ sneaking suspicions that Lin’s new posting at 51 might indeed reignite some old flames with Gallo.

“Herrmann is very resigned and resolved that relationships can be difficult, but you do what you need to do to get through it,” Eigenberg told reporters in discussing how Herrmann is likely to react to 51’s new addition and her connection to Gallo. “We got to know who ends up with who, and who might not end up with who because America wants to know!”
