When Chicago PD returns tonight, it’s bringing back a familiar face—but that may not be a good thing.

“The Radical Truth” features the return of Jack Coleman as Bob Ruzek for the first time in several seasons. In true Chicago PD fashion, his reappearance is bad news for his son Adam (Patrick John Flueger).

All NBC has released about the plot is that Intelligence is looking for Ruzek’s missing father, but if you’ve watched the show long enough, you can guess how things might go.

Whenever Bob Ruzek has turned up on the show, it’s been trouble, and his last episode (“Fathers and Sons”) left him in a particularly bad place. Adam discovered his dad was working on the side because he was in financial trouble.

So is he still having money issues and they’ve gotten worse? Or is he in some other kind of predicament that Adam has to get him out of? And more importantly, will Adam be able to get him out?

Of the three One Chicago series, Chicago PD is the most likely to opt for the tragic ending. It also has a habit of using family members for dramatic effect (see: killing Hank Voight’s son, having Kim Burgess’ sister kidnapped and assaulted, Kevin Atwater’s siblings having to be sent away). So it wouldn’t be a shocker if this episode ended with Bob being killed off just because that’s the most dramatic way to conclude the story.

There are, however, other angles to explore if the show wants to go there. How will Burgess (Marina Squerciati) react? It’s unclar where she and Adam are in their relationship, but this would be a good time to tell us, since of all people Burgess would be the most likely to come to Ruzek’s aid.

What about Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins)? The last few episodes have tested their partnership, but we’ve seen a lot this season of Ruzek supporting Atwater, so it’d be cool if the script turned the tables and showed us Kevin having Adam’s back in the same way. If there are still any bumps in their working relationship, this could smooth it over.

It’s a familiar plotline but there are ways to add things to it that would make it more interesting and not just another “family member in peril” story. Watch to see if Chicago PD takes any of those paths, though, or if it’ll stick to what it already knows.
