Charlie Barnett series Ordinary Joe gets first season at NBC
Another One Chicago alum is returning to NBC next TV season. Charlie Barnett’s latest project Ordinary Joe has been picked up for its first season.
Barnett played Peter Mills on Chicago Fire for several seasons, and more recently has earned critical acclaim for his co-starring performance in Netflix‘s Russian Doll.
In Ordinary Joe, he co-stars as Eric Payne, the best friend of title character Joe Kimbreau, played by Zoo and Mad Men alum James Wolk. The series follows Joe through three different lifetimes as his life changes based on the choice he makes at one crossroads in his life.

The show doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but it officially makes Charlie Barnett the second Chicago alum to have a new show on NBC (the first being Jon Seda, who was re-hired to La Brea around the same time that show was picked up to series).
Since departing Fire, though, Barnett’s career has taken off in spades.
He’s done a ton of work for Netflix; outside of Russian Doll he also appeared in the most recent season of You and in its new version of Tales of the City. He played a major antagonist in the final season of The CW‘s Arrow and also starred in the second season of ABC’s Secrets & Lies opposite Mekia Cox, who’d go on to be cast on Chicago Med.
Audiences have asked if Charlie Barnett would ever return as Mills, and he’s open to the idea, but it hasn’t happened yet.
With the pickups of Ordinary Joe and La Brea, plus the whole One Chicago franchise already having been renewed for multiple seasons last year, NBC’s schedule will have five shows that are either a part of the franchise or have a former Chicago star in them. Wonder if the network will notice that trend and do some cross-promotion?
